Essential Care Tips For Maintaining Your Kids' Bedding

Children need to get about 10 hours of sleep every night. There are factors that contribute to having a good night's rest. Kids feel comfortable when they lay on fresh and clean bedding. Taking proper care of bedding helps your children sleep better. Caring for kids bedding ensures that you do not have to replace them quite often. With washing and maintaining, you can extend the lifespan of the bedding and keep them in good condition as well.

 Bed Sheets

Before you wash your kid's bed sheets, you check the manufacturer's instructions. So you can know what to do and what not to do. The material of your bed sheet also determines how you are meant to wash it. Silk sheets should be hand washed in warm water. Bamboo sheets should be machine washed in cold water on a gentle cycle. Sateen and linen types of sheets are to be washed by hand in cold water or on a gentle cycle using a machine. If you have polyester, cotton or microfiber sheets, you should wash them on either gentle or heavy-duty cycles. Wash the same types or colors of bedsheets together to prevent dye transfer and pilling. Wash lighter colors in warm water and darker colors in cool water.

When you wash sheets regularly, they will keep looking nice and clean. It's recommended that you wash bedsheets at least once a week to avoid the build-up of dust and dirt. You need to have at least two or three sets of bed sheets and switch them weekly so they can last longer. Avoid using hot water to wash your bedsheets because it tends to shrink the material. You can also wash them inside out in a bid to protect the color from fading. After washing, tumble dry sheets as instructed by the care label. Do not put bed sheets back on the bed or in your linen closet if not fully dried. This will help you avoid mildew growth in your kid's bedroom. If you want to go the extra mile, you can iron your sheets and fold them neatly in a dry shelf or drawer. Make sure your closet shelves are lined with paper to prevent the fabric from discovering. If you use storage boxes, do not use a lid for easy ventilation and to prevent the growth of mildew.

 Duvets and comforters

Duvets shouldn't be washed together with their covers. Always remember to remove the duvet cover and wash it separately. You can use a machine to wash the duvet cover together with the bedsheets. However, you should read the manufacturer's instructions in case there's any special guide for you to follow. You can either wash a comforter in a high-capacity machine or give it to professionals. A down comforter is delicate and you have to wash on a gentle cycle for optimal results. You should use a mild detergent and desist from using bleach or harsh chemicals on your bedding. If there's any stain, spot treat it before tossing into the washing machine. Rinse your comforter for about 2 or 3 times to prevent detergent from being retained in it. Then tumble dry on a low heat cycle.

You should endeavor to wash your kid's comforters at least four times a year while the cover has to be washed every week or after two weeks. It's a good thing that most comforters come with covers that prevent dirt and dust from getting into them. Covers also prevent dead skin cells, sweat, and oils from getting into the comforter thereby keeping it dirt-free. Of course, there are some fancy comforters that do not have covers. If your kids are using those, you would have to spot-treat with water and soap when stained. You should check the care label for specific information about the laundry of the comforter. After washing, make sure that all comforters are fully dry. The best option is to machine dry but you can hang under the sun if you wish. Keep comforters in a cool, dry place where they can breathe properly.

 Pillows

You can wash pillowcases every two weeks but pillows should be washed every three to six months. Check the care label on each pillow to see laundry instructions. It's best to machine wash pillows on gentle cycle. Immediately after wash, tumble dry twice or thrice on low heat to avoid mildew. Pillowcases can be washed together with bed sheets and duvet covers especially if they share the same materials. Make sure to use pillowcases or pillow protectors to avoid dust and sweat from getting into the pillow.

Whether it's a down or synthetic pillow, you can wash it using a machine and mild liquid detergent. It's not always advisable to use powdered detergents because they tend to leave residue on the fabric. Rinse the pillows two or three times to ensure that all the detergent is gone. Tumble dry pillows properly on a no-heat or low heat setting to avoid mold. You can include some dryer balls to fluff pillows in the dryer. You should also plump your kid's pillows when you make their bed to stop the fill from flattening.

 Mattress

You can care for your kid's mattress by using a protector. A mattress protector also prevents sweat, body oils, spills, and dust from soaking into the filling. The cover helps to prolong its lifespan and keep it well-maintained. You can use a cover that is paddled with feathers for some softness. Of course, you have to wash the mattress cover every month or after two months. Although most mattresses don't require flipping, you should rotate at least twice a year for a more evenly distributed wear. Remember, a well-ventilated room is important for the breathability of the mattress to prevent moisture, mildew, and mold from forming. Most mattresses last anywhere from 10 to 50 years depending on the quality.
